In a recent video by Clarion Safety Systems, they discuss icons and symbols and how to test to communicate more clearly what a graphic icon means. Put into the context of an emergency situation — like a Tsunami, or a Hurricaine — or into a situation where the language or culture is different, how do we design beyond the standard?

Is there a need to have a better ISO standard? One that is recognized worldwide? Imagine walking into a foreign airport and immediately understanding your situation because of the standardized symbols.

For designers, does this cause an issue as far as creativity goes. Is this the one space where “breaking the rules” just does not work?
