Reflecting on 25 years: oxford recycles app

Pivot takes a look back at 12 very special projects to mark 25 years serving their clients

Oxford Properties Group manages office buildings globally. In 2015, Summerhill Group (a sustainability consulting firm) was brought in to help engage their Oxford's building occupants in a recycling program. They turned to us to design an experiential campaign that included an iPad game and an on-site kiosk.

Summerhill wanted to better educate building occupants about what could and could not be recycled in a fun and engaging manner. So we began by conducting a material audit to look at existing recycling related communication collateral. We determined that an iPad game would target these goals, so we completed a quick landscape review to gather our frames of reference.

Building upon our research, we defined a game play and scoring mechanism. The game’s objective is simple: players have to sort through garbage and drag recyclable items into the recycling bin. Collaborating with key team members at Summerhill, we came up with a fun visual style and overall colour scheme. With the visuals in place, we perfected the interactions of the game to maximize the user experience.

The game was was very well received and the recycling kiosk campaign was extended out to additional Oxford buildings in the region.
