From Grassroots AI Governance to Design Fiction: The Highlights of DesignMeets 2024

March 27, 2025 8 minute read

DesignMeets, a community initiative hosted by PIVOT, held a compelling series of events in 2024.

We tackled crucial topics shaping the design landscape — from the ethical considerations of AI (artificial intelligence) to the power of graphic culture, these discussions offered valuable insights for designers and the broader community. Organisations from various sectors, including non-profit, grassroots, and public sectors, engaged with these topics, sharing their perspectives and challenges. The role of technology and new technologies, such as AI and other digital tools, was central in shaping the discussions and addressing the evolving challenges faced by these organisations. Here’s a quick recap of the key highlights:

Sustainable Design: Designing for Tomorrow, Today

November 13, 2024

This virtual event emphasized that sustainability is now a core design principle, not an option, with a strong emphasis on considering the environment. Moving beyond human-centered design to consider all forms of life is crucial. Incremental actions and a focus on aesthetics can drive significant change. Speakers highlighted practical steps, like using non-human personas to inform UX and rethinking material choices in industrial design. Emerging technologies are enabling more sustainable and environmentally friendly design solutions.

Transforming Women's Health: Conversations for Change

October 16, 2024

Held at OCAD University, this event addressed the underfunding of women’s health research, highlighting how limited funding restricts innovation and impacts service delivery. The importance of integrating lived experiences and a multidisciplinary approach, along with prioritizing education and developing skills for both patients and the healthcare workforce to improve outcomes, was stressed. Panelists shared examples of user-centred design in heart health, mental health during pregnancy, and the need for safe and inclusive spaces for marginalized groups.

Why Graphic Culture Matters: Design Beyond the Surface

Rick Poynor and Ian Chalmers discussed Poynor’s book, emphasizing that graphic design is a powerful cultural force beyond mere commerce. Designers were encouraged to adopt a critical lens and prioritize deep reading. Sharing ideas and fostering collaborative idea generation were highlighted as central to advancing graphic culture. The conversation touched on resisting digital dependence and recognizing the “soft power“ inherent in design choices. Poynor defined “graphic culture” and advocated for a more profound cultural inquiry within the field.

The Intersection of Science Fiction & Design

May 22, 2024

Julian Bleecker of Near Future Laboratory introduced “Design Fiction,” using science fiction to explore potential futures and inform innovation. The event highlighted the value of imagination alongside data and presented the ASIC framework (Assess, Synthesize, Imagine, Create) to structure this process. Creating tangible prototypes (“artefacts”) from the near future helps make potential realities relatable. For example, design fiction has been used to prototype speculative AI policy documents, allowing organizations to anticipate and address challenges related to transparency and ethics.

When AI Governance Goes Grassroots

March 13, 2024

This event shifted the focus of AI governance from boardrooms to community-level discussions, highlighting the rise of grassroots AI and how ai tools and ai powered solutions are being adopted at the community level. Understanding AI’s “hidden value chain“ is essential for effective governance. AI technologies and ai systems are central to this, and there is a need for practical solutions that improve efficiency and automate tasks for organisations. Speakers urged a questioning of the “move fast” mentality and emphasized the need to address how AI can reinforce existing biases. There are growing concerns among governments, stakeholders, and the organisation about security, data privacy, and the ethical challenges that come with AI adoption. The concept of “AI countergovernance“—community-led efforts to ensure inclusivity and justice in AI development—was introduced. The pivotal role of leadership, targeted initiatives, and support from organisations and community leaders is crucial in overcoming these challenges.

There is an ongoing debate and increasing awareness around the benefit and benefits of AI, and how these collective efforts make a difference in the sector. However, there is a real struggle and significant effort required to contribute to and support grassroots AI initiatives, making community building and the engagement of communities and groups essential. The demand for more focused and interesting initiatives is growing, and there is value in exploring and discussing new approaches to AI governance. Building knowledge, ability, and skills in using each tool and ai tools is vital, with businesses, companies, and the technology sector supporting these efforts.

These DesignMeets events in 2024 provided valuable platforms for connection, collaboration, and critical thinking within the design community, addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time. If you would like to contact the organisers to hear more, are interested in contributing, or want to be heard in future meaningful discussions, we look forward to sharing more detail on upcoming grassroots movements and sector-wide initiatives.
